Genre Research: The Boy
This movie had a background story that was established in the beginning of the film. I love the way that the background was established in the beginning of the film through pictures and through dialogue too. In my final task I wanted to establish a background through a photograph like a fake family portrait or just a photo of their parents. I was thinking of establishing the background in pieces so that the audience would be able to piece certain things together to understand what's really going on. But, now I am planning on probably establishing the background in my final tasks this way instead. The setting in this film is a house and this is also one of the locations I am going to film at. Although, the house I film at will not be in an isolated area surrounded by trees. This background music was also an element I'd like to base my final tasks on because of the intensity it added to the movie. The setting is also in a more isolated area as well where you don't really see neighbors expect for the Malcolm; someone who also worked for the doll's parents. This expresses the idea of isolation and loneliness in way considering she lives there with this doll. On top of that the son's grave being near the house really wraps everything up together. I also loved how they incorporated emotions other than fear into the movie like when the nanny and Malcolm started developing feelings for each other. As the romantic aspect of the film was being developed the film did not lose sight of the big idea which was the doll. This movie has a huge plot twist towards the middle of the film. Where the nanny stops abiding by the unrealistic rules given to her by her employers who also happen to be the "boy's" parents, which eventually led to some inexplicable events. The boy is portrayed as a doll but was expected to be treated as an actual boy but doesn't talk or hear just comes off as a regular doll. Before his parents left her alone with the doll to be his nanny and care for him they warned her of the importance of following these instructions given to her and the rules. Once the nanny started violating these rules, the doll started doing weird things and she believed that there was a spirit trapped inside the doll. This plot twist was an element that appealed to me because without the plot alone just wouldn't enough to make a great movie. There are honestly no aspects of this movie that did not appeal to me, I liked everything about it.
